Today we are going to talk about a great Indian boxer. He was the only Indian boxer who fought with Mohammed Ali.
Kaur Singh was born in a Jaat Sikh family in Khanal Khurd village of Punjab. He was a small farmer before joining the Indian Army as a Havildar at the age of 23. He also participated in the Indo-Pakistani War.
Boxing career
Kaur Singh won a gold medal for India in the Senior National Boxing Championships in 1979 and remained a gold medal winner for four years until 1983.
In 1980, he won a gold medal in the Asian Boxing Championships held in Mumbai. He won a gold medal in the heavyweight category in the Asian Games held in New Delhi and was awarded the Arjuna Award by the Sports Ministry in the same year.
Fighting against Muhammad Ali
On 27 January 1980, Kaur Singh played a four round exhibition match against Muhammad Ali at the National Stadium in Delhi.
In this match, Kaur Singh represented India in front of 50,000 people.
Kaur Singh had put everything, including land and jewellery, at stake for his career. The government also promised to give him money but he had to run around government offices for 38 years to get the same money.
This is not just the case with him but there are many people who have gone through such circumstances.
